Key Types of Handcuffs
- Chain Cuffs: The most common variety; they feature a short chain connecting the two cuffs, which allows for flexible movement and makes them easier to apply.
- Hinged Cuffs: Connected by a rigid hinge rather than a chain, restricting more wrist movement and offering officers stronger leverage.
- Rigid Cuffs: Solid bars connecting the cuffs, making them the most rigid type to further limit the subject’s ability to manipulate the restraints.
How They Work
Handcuffs operate using a ratchet and pawl system. The rotating arm of the cuff slides through the ratchet to close tightly around the wrist but is prevented from opening backward without a key. Many handcuffs feature a double-lock mechanism. By engaging the double lock, the cuffs are prevented from tightening any further, which protects the restrained individual from injuries caused by restricted circulation or overtightening
